This unit provides graduated open shelving that displays a wide range of resources and books. It creates defined spaces that focus children's thinking and stimulate independent enquiry. It is the foundation of an effective environment being used in many areas to present well-organised accessible provision.

In this example the shelving unit presents a well resourced water area rich in mathematical and scientific concepts, as well as language, story and imaginative play. Equipment is presented either individually to highlight the size, order and comparison of the resources or in small collections that are easy for children to manage.

As children progress into Key Stage 1 they will explore more complex concepts with a wider range of resources and their imaginative play will become more sophisticated.
