This Shape and Patterns Sensory Collection supports rich sensory exploration as children engage in focused hands-on play as they stack, balance and build with the tactile blocks and shapes.

The open-ended collection of natural and rainbow blocks encourages creative thinking, self-regulation, and independent problem solving, as children explore shape, pattern, and spatial relationships through play. This versatile collection can be enjoyed independently, with a peer, or alongside a practitioner to support sensory exploration.

Description

Introduce the Shape and Patterns Sensory Collection to the classroom as a valuable tool for supporting children with sensory processing needs or those who benefit from calming, focused activities. This tactile resource promotes self-regulation and sensory exploration in a calm and engaging way.

The collection includes a carefully chosen selection of coloured and natural wooden blocks such as cones, rings, barrels and conical figures - offering a rich variety of shapes, textures and weights for children to explore. Children can sort, balance, roll, spin and stack the blocks, supporting both fine motor development and problem solving skills, while also meeting the needs of sensory seekers through repetitive, rhythmic movements and physical interaction.

For children who are soothed by sound and rhythm, the wooden blocks provide opportunities to explore auditory feedback. Encourage children to tap or knock different shapes together and compare the sounds - “How do two cubes sound compared to two barrels?”, “What happens when shapes are mixed?”. These playful investigations promote curiosity, active listening, and focused attention.

Children who enjoy organising and pattern making will be drawn to creating sequences with the blocks - using rings to enclose shapes, arranging lines, or sorting by size, shape, or colour. Even the process of placing the blocks into the basket can offer a soothing, purposeful routine, ideal for children who find comfort in repetition and order.

This open-ended resource also supports language development and emotional literacy. As children build and create, practitioners can scaffold conversations around their process - “What did you try?”, “How did that feel?”, “What might you do differently next time?”- encouraging reflection, resilience, and the use of expressive and descriptive language.

Enhance the collection with a selection of familiar small world resources to encourage imaginative play and storytelling and further developing communication and language.

The collection includes a natural woven striped basket to store the wooden blocks.
