Enhance your dry sand area with the Dry Sand Resource Collection 1–2yrs. This carefully curated collection has been designed by Early Excellence curriculum specialists to support young children as they explore dry sand through open-ended, tactile experiences. The resources provide meaningful opportunities for early exploration, discovery and independent investigation.
The tools are lightweight and easy to grasp to support young children to develop hand control. Children can scoop, pour and release sand, using a range of buckets and scoops, observing how it moves, falls and scatters. These repeated actions support early cause-and-effect understanding and simple problem-solving through trial and repetition.
This open-ended collection supports early schematic play, including trajectory, transporting, containing, releasing and repeated actions. Familiar, everyday tools encourage shared attention as children watch sand move, fall and change.
Children will enjoy the imaginary play that the collection offers as they use the dinosaurs and construction vehicles to begin early imaginative play and storytelling, creating opportunities for practitioners to support the youngest learners language development.
Children can extend their investigations by exploring other Early Excellence 1-2yrs Resources, such as the Wet Sand Resource Collection 1-2yrs and the Water Resource Collection 1-2yrs. This Dry Sand Resource Collection 1–2yrs includes:
- 5 chunky wooden dinosaurs, assorted, approx. 2.5cm thick
- 3 wooden construction vehicles, vehicle may vary, approx. H11cm
- 1 coloured bucket with spout
- 1 metal bucket with handle, approx. H10cm
- 1 metal bowl, 0.5l capacity
- 2 wooden bowls and scoops
- Collection of plastic sand tools, including scoops, spade, rake, baby spoon
- 1 melamine colander, approx. D15cm
- 1 plastic sieve
- Stack and pour egg
- Suitable for 12 months and over, under appropriate adult supervision

For use with children from 1-2yrs: resources must ONLY be used with effective, close adult supervision. The competency and development of each child should be considered before introducing the resource into the environment. This must be regularly monitored and assessed as new children begin their learning journey within the environment.
